Can’t type in Windows search bar – Windows 10

How to fix can’t type in Windows search bar in Windows 10?

As per our research, we have listed all the possible troubleshooting steps to fix the issue with unable to type in Windows search bar. Perform each resolution step and check if the issue gets fix after each step. If the issue remains, you can proceed with the further resolution steps.

Quick Note: Before proceeding with the further resolution steps, we suggest you to create a System Restore point first. If something goes wrong during the troubleshooting, you can restore your computer back to previous working state.

Run PowerShell command:

If the Start menu or the Windows search not working, you can try running the below PowerShell command in order to fix this issue. Refer the below steps and perform the same on your computer.

  1. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC keys on your keyboard to open Task Manager. Click on File and select the option Run new task.

2. Type cmd, checkbox the option Create this task with administrative privileges and click on OK.

3. On the elevated command prompt, type the below command and hit enter.

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

4. After that, copy paste the below command and hit enter.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like “*SystemApps*”} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

5. Once after the execution, reboot your computer and check if you can type in the search bar now.

If the issue with can’t type in Windows search bar remains, you can proceed with the further resolution steps.

Reinstall Windows 10 default apps:

If the above troubleshooting step does not work, you can try reinstalling the Windows 10 default apps using the PowerShell commands. To perform the same, refer the below steps.

  1. Press Windows logo + X keys on your keyboard and select the option Windows PowerShell (Admin).

2. On the elevated PowerShell screen, copy paste the below command and hit enter.

$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + ‘\AppxManifest.xml’ ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest

After the execution, you should be able to type in the Windows search bar. If not, try rebooting your computer and check again. If the issue remains, you can proceed with the further resolution steps.

Check if the Windows Search service is running:

If the Windows search service is not running on your computer, it may not work properly. In this case, we suggest you try restarting the service on your computer. Refer the below steps to perform the same.

  1. Press Windows logo + R keys on your keyboard to open RUN window. Type services.msc and hit enter. It will open the Services window.

2. Search and locate Windows Search Service. Check if the Service is running or not. If it is not running, restart it.

Now, check if the issue with can’t type in Windows search bar fixed. If the issue remains, you can proceed with the further resolution steps.

Turn on language bar using ctfmon.exe:

When the language bar is turned OFF in your computer, you may encounter the issue with can’t type in Windows search bar. Ctfmon.exe file in your computer controls this feature. Therefore, executing this file might help. Refer the below steps.

  1. Press Windows logo + R keys to open RUN window. Type C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe and hit enter.

2. Now, check if the search bar works fine. If it remains, you can proceed with the further steps.

3. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC keys on your keyboard to open Task Manager. Click on File and select the option Run new task.

4. Type cmd, checkbox the option Create this task with administrative privileges and click on OK.

5. On the elevated Command Prompt, copy paste the below command and hit enter.

REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v ctfmon /t REG_SZ /d CTFMON.EXE

Now, check if the issue with can’t type in Windows search bar gets fix. If the issue remains, you can refer the further steps.

Perform System Reset to fix can’t type in Windows search bar:
